Water Heater Pipe Corrosion

Water Heater Pipe Corrosion is a serious problem.  We removed this pipe from a water heater that was leaking.  The water heater was only 5 years old and was leaking and could not be repaired.

This water heater was improperly installed and that was the cause of the leak.  Corrosion like this is called galvanic corrosion.  It is a electrochemical reaction that occurs when different types of metal are connected and water is contacting them.

The corrosion weakened the pipe fittings so bad that one of them broke while we were replacing the water heater.  The corrosion inside the water heated tank had eaten through the wall of the tank causing the leak.  When this happens, the tank cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

Call me with your questions on water heaters, I am always happy to help.
