What is a Backflow Preventer?

A backflow preventer is used to protect potable water supplies from any contamination or pollution due to unwanted backflow. Backflow happens when water flows in the reverse direction which can lead to serious health risks. The health risks can range from no physical impact to severe illness or even death. Some effects can be immediate while others may go unnoticed for years.

Water is normally maintains at a significant pressure which allows it to flow from all the different faucets and fixtures but if that pressure were to fail or be reduced then the pipe may allow contaminated water from soil or other sources to get into the water system. The backflow prevention device will help protect you from this.

Examples of how pressure loss occurs:

  1. Water main bursts
  2. Pipe Freezes
  3. Unexpected high demand on the water system ( fire hydrants )

There are also other reason for low water pressure that could relate to the fixture you’re using that just needs replaced or it could just be temperature specific which makes it lose pressure at a certain temperature. Keeping dirty water out of our water systems is very important.
